Someone Special Saturday is hosted by Ishita over at The Reading Fish
This week's question is:
Who is the toughest character you have ever discovered? It can be mentally, physically, or emotionally. what made them so special?
Many of you probably saw my random twitter outbursts this week about Pandemonium by Lauren Oliver, the sequel to Delirium. I was lucky enough to get an ARC and devour it within two days. It was probably one of my favorite books this year. Purely amazing, and I couldn't have asked for a better sequel. So, my pick for a character this week is Lena from both Delirium and Pandemonium.
Lena starts Delirium as any other normal girl in her society. She obeys the rules and does what she is told. She conforms to society, that is until she meets Alex. Lena begins to fall in love with Alex, which is illegal in the futuristic version of the united States Delirium is set in.
So, here are a few of Lena's problems:
Lena lives with her aunt and uncle and her mother is gone, supposedly dead.
She is in love with a boy and if anyone finds out, well.... that just can't happen.
Lena begins to get a bit rebellious, and the authority figures don't like that.
Lena starts off a bit soft and not very strong, but as the story grows, so does Lena. She grows a thicker skin and begins to gain her own ideas on the society.
Now, I think Pandemonium is where Lena becomes one of the toughest characters I have ever discovered. So be warned, this section most definitely contains spoilers if you haven't read Delirium.
-Alex is dead. Lena has to deal with the pain of her lost lover and somehow continue in the struggle to survive.
-Lena is trapped alone in the Wilds, that is, until she is rescued. Lena must adapt quickly to living with her saviors and help them as they've helped her.
Lena is a lot stronger in Pandemonium just because she has grown so much and gone through so many tragedies. She is basically a new character after entering the Wilds and she is definitely one of the toughest in my opinion.
